Red hose plant

The red hose plant is a plant whose leaves and roots are used to make medicine. The red hose plant is used orally for digestive problems and especially constipation, for diseases of the urinary tract and water retention, as a cure for smallpox and to prevent scarring. An extract from the red hose plant (Sarapin) is administered as an injection. Doctors inject sarapin to relieve pain in the back, neck and other parts of the body.

How does the red hose plant work?

The red hose plant contains tannins and other chemicals that are believed to help with some digestive tract issues. There is some evidence to suggest that an extract of red hose plant may affect nerves involved in the perception of pain.

How effective is red hose plant?

There is not enough scientific data to make a statement about the effectiveness of red hose plant for digestive disorders, constipation, urinary tract disorders and water retention, as well as for the prevention of scarring and as an injection for pain. Further scientific research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of the red hose plant in these applications.

Safety and side effects

A particular extract of the red hose plant, known as sarapin, appears to be safe and harmless when injected by a physician. However, it is not safe and harmless when injected into painful areas and inflammatory swellings or by a person not trained to do so. The red hose plant can cause some side effects including a feeling of heat or heaviness. Injections may also make symptoms worse. There is not enough information about whether red hose plant taken orally is safe and harmless, or what possible side effects may occur when taken orally.
