Mormon tea

Mormon tea is tea made from the Ephedra nevadensis plant. The dried twigs are boiled in water to make a tea. Mormon tea is used as a drink and as a medicine. Mormon tea (Ephedra nevadensis) should not be confused with ephedra (Ephedra sinica and other Ephedra species). Unlike these plants, Mormon tea does not contain ephedrine. Mormon tea is used as a medicine to treat sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis and gonorrhea. It is also used for colds, kidney disorders and as a tonic.

How does Mormon tea work?

The tannins contained in Mormon tea have drying effects and can reduce body secretions such as phlegm. This could explain its use for colds. There is not enough information about how Mormon tea might work for other uses such as kidney problems or sexually transmitted diseases.

How effective is Mormon tea?

There is not enough scientific data to make a statement about the effectiveness of Mormon tea for colds, kidney problems and sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis and gonorrhea. Further scientific research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of Mormon tea in these applications.

Safety and side effects

Mormontea appears to be safe and harmless when consumed as a beverage in normal dietary amounts. However, there is not enough information on whether Mormon tea is safe and harmless in medicinal quantities. Possible side effects include stomach upset, kidney and liver damage, nasal or throat cancer, increased urine flow and constipation.

Precautions and warnings

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Mormon tea appears to be safe and safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women in normal dietary amounts. However, larger amounts should be avoided until more is known about their safety.

Interactions

Care should be taken when combining Mormon tea with the following medications:

Medications taken orally

Mormontea absorbs substances in the stomach and intestines. Consuming Mormon tea in combination with oral medications could reduce the amount of drug substance absorbed by the body, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the medication. To prevent this interaction, Mormon tea should be consumed at least one hour after taking oral medication.

Dosage

An appropriate dosage of Mormon tea depends on various factors such as age, health status and others. At the present time, there is insufficient scientific data to make a statement about appropriate dosage ranges for Mormon tea. For this reason, you should follow the dosage instructions on the label and/or consult a doctor or pharmacist before use.
