Camphor is a powder that occurs naturally in the bark of the camphor tree. Today, camphor is mostly produced synthetically. Camphor is contained in some products that are applied to the skin. It is a commonly used ingredient in remedies that are applied to the skin for coughs and skin irritations.

What is camphor used for?

Rubbing camphor ointment on the throat and chest can help with coughs. Camphor is also applied to the skin for pain caused by insect bites, cold sores or minor burns. Camphor can also help with itching. There is evidence that a cream containing camphor and two other ingredients can help with osteoarthritis symptoms.
