Gamma-oryzanol

Gamma oryzanol is a substance that is extracted from rice bran oil. It is also found in wheat bran and some types of fruit and vegetables. Gamma Oryzanol is used by some people as a medicine. Gamma Oryzanol is used for high cholesterol levels, as well as symptoms of menopause and aging. Some people use Gamma Oryzanol to increase testosterone levels and growth hormone levels, as well as to improve strength during resistance training.

How does Gamma Oryzanol work?

GammaOryzanol may lower cholesterol levels by reducing the absorption of cholesterol from food.

GammaOryzanol is also often promoted for the treatment of menopause, but it is unclear whether it works in this type of application. Some scientists suggest that gamma oryzanol may be helpful due to its effects on luteinizing hormone (LH). However, this effect has not yet been proven in humans. Some people use gamma oryzanol to increase testosterone and growth hormone levels. However, gamma oryzanol does not appear to have any effect on the levels of these hormones. In fact, animal studies suggest that gamma oryzanol may reduce testosterone production.

How effective is Gamma Oryzanol?

GammaOryzanol may be effective when used to reduce cholesterol levels. Gamma Oryzanol appears to significantly reduce total cholesterol levels, bad LDL cholesterol levels and triglyceride levels. The effects of gamma oryzanol on levels of good HDL cholesterol are less clear. Different studies have produced different results.

There is insufficient scientific data to draw a conclusion about the effectiveness of gamma oryzanol when used to increase testosterone and growth hormone levels, to improve strength during resistance training, and to treat symptoms of menopause and aging. Further scientific research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of Gamma Oryzanol in these applications.

Safety and side effects

Gamma Oryzanol is potentially safe and harmless for most adults. However, the potential side effects of Gamma Oryzanol are not known.

Precautions and warnings

Pregnancy and lactation: Not enough is known about the use of Gamma Oryzanol during pregnancy and lactation. For this reason, pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid benzoin.

Interactions

At the present time there is no information on interactions of Gamma Oryzanol with medications or supplements.

Dosage

The following dosages have been investigated in scientific studies:

Oral:

  • To lower cholesterol levels: The usual dose of Gamma Oryzanol is 300 mg per day. One study used 100 mg three times a day.
