Copaiba Balsam

Copaivabalsam is a sap-like substance extracted from the stumps of trees of the Copaifera species. Copaiva balsam is processed to produce copaiva oil. Both copaiva balsam and copaiva oil are used in the production of medicine. Copaiva balsam is used to treat bronchitis, hemorrhoids, constipation, diarrhea, bladder infections and other urinary tract infections. In addition to this, copaiva balsam is also used as a stimulant. Copaiva balsam is used as an ingredient in food and beverages. In industrial production, copaiva balsam and copaiva oil are used in the manufacture of soap, cosmetics and perfume. In pharmaceutical preparations, both copaiva balsam and copaiva oil are used as an ingredient in cough medicines and diuretics.

How does copaiva balsam work?

Chemicals contained in copaiva balsam and copaiva oil could kill germs. Other chemicals contained in copaiva balsam may reduce inflammatory swelling, increase urine production and act as an expectorant.

How effective is copaiva balm?

There is not enough scientific data to assess the effectiveness of copaiva balm for hemorrhoids, diarrhea, urinary tract infections, constipation and bronchitis. Further scientific research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of copaiva balm for these conditions.

Safety and side effects

Copaivabalsam is safe and harmless for most people in normal food quantities. However, it does not appear to be safe and harmless when used as a medicine. Copaiva balsam can cause side effects such as abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes, tremors, groin pain, and insomnia. When applied to the skin, it can cause redness, itching, and rashes that leave brown spots after healing.

Precautions and warnings

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Copaiva balsam is safe when consumed in food form, but it does not appear to be safe and harmless in medicinal amounts, which are typically higher. For this reason, pregnant and breastfeeding women should not exceed normal food quantities.

Interactions

Care should be taken when combining copaiva balsam with the following medications:

Lithium

Copaivabalsam could have a dehydrating (diuretic) effect. Taking copaiva balsam may impair the excretion of lithium by the body, which could result in increased lithium levels and serious side effects. For this reason, it is important to consult your doctor before using copaiva balm if you are taking lithium. The lithium dosage may need to be adjusted.

Dosage

An appropriate dosage of copaiva balsam depends on various factors such as age, state of health and others. At the present time, there is insufficient scientific data to make a statement about appropriate dosage ranges for copaiva balsam. For this reason, you should follow the dosage instructions on the label and/or consult a doctor or pharmacist before use.
