Colostrum

Almost every day a new substance or product seems to appear that can supposedly cure every ailment on earth. There is no doubt that many valuable natural remedies are being discovered (or rediscovered) these days, but there are also quite a few remedies that do not live up to the exaggerated claims. The immunoglobulins present in colostrum are capable of neutralizing bacteria, viruses and yeasts. So when another dietary supplement with a broad spectrum of activity comes onto the market that claims to do everything from boosting the immune system to helping burn fat, I tend to be skeptical and investigate exactly what is behind it. This was also the case with colostrum. When I first came across it, the purported effects seemed too good to be true. But then I began to read some of the extensive research literature on this substance and my interest was piqued. Maybe it's true: there may be a natural substance that helps the body regain its physiological balance - a natural state of bursting health and vitality. Colostrum is the pre-milk secretion produced in a mother's mammary glands during the first 24-28 hours after giving birth. Colostrum contains life-sustaining immune and growth factors that ensure the health and vitality of the newborn. Colostrum is so important that most suckling baby animals would simply die without it. In the 1950s and 1960s, many doctors advised against breastfeeding. This was the height of the "arrogance of science" - trying to convince us that man-made formulas were actually better than natural breast milk. Consequently, many of us who have not breastfed are not naturally "immunized", meaning our immune and digestive systems have not received the initial boost that colostrum provides. This leaves us susceptible to diseases, pollutants and allergies that are all around us, increasing in quantity and toxicity year after year. The more I read about colostrum's ability to mitigate and even reverse these problems, the more interested I became. Nature, in her infinite wisdom, has produced an amazing substance that helps infants grow, feel well and resist disease. Now it has been medically proven that adults can also benefit from the tremendously wide-ranging benefits of colostrum.

What is colostrum

Colostrum, also known as colostrum, is one of the oldest and most extraordinary foods found in nature. It is as old as motherhood, because colostrum is the milk of a mammal for the newborn in the first 24 to 72 hours of life. The ingredients are not found in such high concentrations in any other natural product. As early as the end of the 18th century, the physician Christoph W. Hufeland described the unique function of colostrum in contrast to "normal" milk, as he recognized its positive influence on the generally high standard of health and the rapid growth of newborn cattle. In 1955, a publication on "immune milk" as a dietary supplement for people with rheumatoid arthritis was published, which brought colostrum back into the spotlight In the following years, colostrum and its components were increasingly studied. This confirmed that breastfed infants were significantly less likely to suffer from allergies and infections, had a greater appetite and normally grew faster than non-breastfed children. It has now been proven that colostrum is of enormous importance not only for infants, but also for adults. Recent studies have shown that it is not only changing environmental influences (e.g. increased pollutants in many areas of our living environment, stress, etc.) that have caused an increase in so-called diseases of civilization; increasingly, their development is being triggered by poor nutrition, in some cases over many years. This is not particularly surprising, as nutritionists have proven that the most effective components of food are often denatured (= altered, destroyed) and thus rendered ineffective in the manufacturing processes commonly used today (e.g. pasteurization, preservation, etc.). The conditions under which fruit and vegetables are grown, e.g. through chemical fertilization, chemical pest control or accelerated growth processes and thus shortened ripening times, also impair the optimal development of the nutrient content or even lead to further pollution of the human body. Colostrum extract is therefore recommended for people of all ages as a healthy and modern dietary supplement. Existing deficits are compensated, the body's resistance increases and the optimized supply situation noticeably promotes healing processes. Colostrum supports the comprehensive stabilization of health so that we can maintain and increase our physical and mental performance.

The ingredients

Immunoglobulins (=antibodies) are of decisive importance for the human organism in preventing and defending against infections and in inhibiting inflammation. Doctors have proven that the high immunoglobulin content in colostrum provides lasting support for the immune system. Amino acids are vital protein building blocks for time metabolism and cell regeneration. A lack of amino acids can be the cause of growth disorders, delayed healing of wounds and inflammation, concentration disorders, general weakening of the immune system, etc. An optimal supply of amino acids ensures the provision of energy in both the physical and mental areas and therefore has a decisive influence on physical and mental performance. Natural growth factors have a positive influence on cell metabolism, so that cell proliferation is promoted and thus a fundamental stabilization of muscle, bone and cartilage tissue as well as tendons is achieved; natural growth factors also help to increase the body's own immune defences. Vitamins are a prerequisite for a regulated protein, fat and carbohydrate metabolism. They must therefore always be present in sufficient concentration. The vitamin B complex contained in colostrum, among other things, counteracts states of exhaustion, promotes blood formation and accelerates stress reduction and recovery after illness.

Obtaining the colostrum extract

The colostrum intended for human consumption is obtained from cows from controlled herds (New Zealand) within the first 24 hours after calving. The calves are left with half of their food. This is more than sufficient for a healthy diet. It contains the highest concentration of essential nutrients during this period. As the relevant DNA sequences of various colostrum components are almost identical in humans and cattle, the benefits for us humans are guaranteed. Colostrum is inedible in its raw state as it has a high content of fat, coarse molecular proteins and impurities. In biotechnological production steps, fat and casein are removed from the colostrum. The result of this innovative process technology is the highly bioactive colostrum extract.

A powerful boost for the immune system

In almost all infections and degenerative diseases, including cancer and heart disease, a reduced function of the immune system can be detected before or at the same time as the outbreak. Research shows that colostrum contains important immune factors (immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, cytokines and interferon) that help to restore a strong immune system. Colostrum also contains polyproline-rich peptides (PRP), which medical studies have shown to help strengthen a poorly functioning immune system. PRP supports the thymus gland in restoring its optimal functioning. The thymus gland produces the vital T-cells that fight viruses and antigens. The PRP found in colostrum also helps to compensate for an overactive immune system in autoimmune diseases in which the body attacks itself. Colostrum is therefore extremely effective for the following diseases, among others: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis (PcP), Lupus and Scleredema. Reports from users all point to the amazing ability of this substance to prevent disease. People who have taken colostrum for some time (usually for another reason initially) report that they no longer get colds or flu, people who started taking colostrum when they were already sick with a viral or bacterial infection report much shorter healing and recovery times.

Growth factors in colostrum - not only for newborns

Colostrum contains many important growth factors that stimulate healing and even induce an anti-ageing response. The list of benefits that these factors bring is so long that they are only mentioned here in brief. Independent medical studies show that the growth factors in colostrum

  • Revitalize and accelerate normal growth of all or injured muscle, bone, cartilage, skin collagen and nerve tissue;
  • support the burning of fat to fuel instead of muscle tissue during fasting (dieting);
  • help to strengthen weak muscles and keep them strong;
  • repair our body's vital DNA and RNA;
  • balance and regulate blood sugar levels;
  • heal burns, surgical wounds, cuts, abrasions and sore lips when applied externally;
  • generally reduce infections and pain, gingivitis, tooth sensitivity, toothache after dental treatment;
  • help to regulate blood sugar levels and brain chemicals, thereby improving alertness and concentration;
  • help to regulate the chemical "feel-good" substances in the brain and thus lift our mood.

Colostrum therefore makes you feel better and recover faster.

According to articles in American magazines such as Iron Man or Muscle & Fitness (these are reputable magazines for bodybuilders that cover carefully researched factual topics), Colostrurn is just as effective as synthetic steroids, which are taken illegally to build muscle mass in bodybuilding! What's more, Colostrum is good for everyone and has no side effects, no problems, no contraindications. When you take antibiotics to fight an infection, instead of strengthening your immune system, you severely weaken it and destroy the acidophilic bacteria that help contain harmful bacteria and yeasts in the gut. If you're foolish enough to take non-prescription steroids (which, believe it or not, many people still do), this results in even worse side effects: hormonal imbalances, damage to the endocrine glandular system, the reproductive system, and the cardiovascular system. In addition, the growth factors present in colostrum have been shown to have an important anti-ageing effect. The skin looks more youthful, age spots and so-called liver spots disappear, bone mass and density increase and sexual function is improved or restored. There may be a fountain of youth after all! What I like most about colostrum is that it is a natural, non-compounded and minimally processed substance. Colostrum is not one of those new natural supplements that are developed in some laboratory like a designer product - it is a miracle product that nature itself produces. Colostrum has a broad spectrum of activity because it has to do so much for a newborn baby. We are all very weak and vulnerable when we are born as babies. Nature responds to this by providing us with one of the most powerful superfoods available to help us grow quickly, resist disease and give us a wonderful sense of wellbeing. It is also important to note that colostrum has been extensively researched by the medical community. It is not a new discovery, but something that is currently being rediscovered. In fact, the use of colostrum began thousands of years ago.

Is bovine colostrum safe and effective in humans?

Scientific research shows that bovine colostrum is easily absorbed by humans and is up to forty times richer in immune factors than human colostrum. The research also shows that only bovine colostrum contains special glycoproteins and protease inhibitors that are highly effective in protecting against the destruction of the active colostrum components by digestive enzymes and stomach acids in adults. Bovine colostrum is safe for human consumption. According to Dr. Robert Preston of the International Institute of Nutritional Research, colostrum is completely safe, provided by nature as the first food for infants. It is difficult to think of another food that is more natural and beneficial. In thousands of years of human use of bovine colostrum, there have been no reports of contraindications, side effects or allergies. This superfood also causes no problems for people with lactose hypersensitivity.

Different effectiveness of colostrum depending on source and processing

Colostrum must be collected, handled and processed correctly to be effective. The results vary greatly depending on the quality of the colostrum used. Colostrum that is processed at high temperatures loses much or most of its biological effectiveness. The colostrum imported into Europe exclusively from the USA fulfills these conditions and is constantly tested for its content of valuable ingredients. The latest scientific studies also show that the body's ability to absorb colostrum increases considerably when it is water-soluble. If, on the other hand, colostrum is not easily soluble in water, it is poorly distributed in the human intestine and is therefore minimally effective. To make it soluble, the colostrum must be micronized and homogenized in a special process.

Opinions of practicing physicians in the USA on colostrum

Dr. Nikki Marie Welch, MD Dr. Nikki Marie Welch uses colostrum in her practice to treat a variety of conditions, including immune dysfunction, chronic infections, autoimmune diseases, colds, flu and allergies. Dr. Welch, who received her doctorate from Duke University and John Hopkins University and continued her studies at Yale, is board certified in internal medicine. "I use many effective nutritional supplements in my practice. Creating well-being from within is part of my philosophy and one of my fundamental tasks as a doctor." "I prescribe colostrum to about a third of my patients. According to their own reports, these patients literally blossom after taking this supplement and their condition usually improves considerably. If we can help the patient feel better without the usual drugs, then we will. In my opinion, modern nutritional biochemistry is a very interesting field - and colostrum is part of it." "The substances contained in colostrum work together naturally to boost the immune system, whereas isolated individual components such as interferon are much more likely to have unwanted side effects and have only been used experimentally so far," she continued. "When I discovered colostrum, I found that it had been extensively studied by reputable doctors, scientists and organizations. This gave me a far more reassuring feeling than many other untested remedies."

Dr. Weich added, "It has been my experience that colostrum quality varies depending on the source, and it is important to find colostrum that has been properly processed to retain its biological potency."

Carl Hawkins, Chiropractor "Colostrum falls under a special category of natural remedies that have a very, very broad spectrum of activity. For this reason, people sometimes make the mistake of thinking of colostrum as a cure-all." "I have found that colostrum helps with conditions that other remedies have not or cannot help. The beauty of it is that patients can try it without fear of adverse effects. As it is a valuable natural substance, there are no problems with possible side effects." "I use colostrum for problem patients who have not been successfully treated by other doctors and methods. It has proven to be very effective for weakened immune systems and autoimmune diseases such as Epstein-Barr virus infection. It is also excellent for patients with poisoning."

Dr. Horton Tatadan, MD Dr. Horton Tatarian received his doctorate from the University of California Medical School in Los Angeles. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biochemistry from the University of California at Berkeley. No longer a physician in the traditional sense, Dr. Tatarian is currently the CEO of Nutriphysiology, a nutritional supplement company. As a biochemist with a medical background, he is able to recommend specific supplements to his customers. "Based on the natural nature of colostrum and feedback from my customers, I believe that certain colostrum brands help people with weak or fragile immune systems in a very effective and natural way. Just as it gives immunity to a newborn child, colostrum helps everyone to have a balanced, strong immune system over time. So I often recommend certain brands when people report problems with chronic infections or inflammation of any kind, or other symptoms of significant immune system weakness or dysfunction such as chronic fatigue, cancer, ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, etc. However, I generally do not recommend long-term use of colostrum in children or adolescents whose immune system is still developing. In addition, depending on individual needs, I advise taking certain dietary supplements to reduce colostrum dependency." "Customers who test the efficacy of colostrum by intermittent use report clear, significant benefits that cannot be detailed here."

Pauqel Mason, herbalist The most common response I get from my patients is: "I feel good when I take it. A woman came to me who was suffering badly from allergies. She was constantly sneezing, her eyes were red and watery, her nose was running. I gave her three capsules of colostrum and within a very short time all her symptoms disappeared. She was amazed and so was I. Since then, I have been using colostrum for allergies on a broad basis. Many of my patients find that they are completely allergy-free after taking colostrum for 6-8 months." "Another "incurable" disease, multiple sclerosis, seems to be positively influenced by colostrum. One patient was prescribed the usual medicines by a doctor. She refused to take them and tried colostrum instead. When she saw her doctor again, he was amazed at the improvement in her condition. I myself take colostrum when my immune system is under attack - it fends off colds almost immediately. And I like the fact that it's a safe natural food supplement with no side effects, which means I can give it to children with a clear conscience.

How safe is colostrum?

Colostrum is a natural food that can be safely consumed in any quantity. Arthritis and autoimmune reaction Anyone who suffers from joint pain knows that this pain is almost always accompanied by an inflammatory process. Inflammation and the pain that accompanies it is actually a mild form of an autoimmune disease or disorder. They are caused by the immune system continuing to attack antigens even when such a reaction is no longer necessary. Many much more severe autoimmune diseases such as muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and scleredema are also the result of hyperfunction of the thymus gland and the immune system. Recent research published in best-selling books has shown that naturally occurring sulphur compounds such as glucosamine sulphate have a positive effect on inflammation, especially in the presence of arthritis. Colostrum is extremely rich in these sulphurous micronutrients, including methylsulphonylmethane (MSM), which is currently attracting a lot of interest in the USA. In fact, colostrum is one of the richest sources of MSM known. It contains other important ingredients, including two of the most potent anti-inflammatory compounds. This makes it far more effective than novel sulphur-based remedies. Colostrum also contains proline-rich polypeptide (PRP), a recently discovered compound that has been shown to regulate the immune response. PRP prevents overproduction of T-cells and lymphocytes stimulated by antigens and mitogens. It stops an overly aggressive immune response, thereby reducing pain and swelling. Thanks to the synergistic combination of growth factors, anti-inflammatory components, PRP, sulphurous micronutrients and other important immune factors, Colostrum is the ultimate natural remedy for inflammation and pain. The growth factors stimulate tissue regeneration, while the sulphurous micronutrients specifically support the formation of new cartilage and connective tissue. Colostrum, which comes from cows that eat fresh, living grass, also contains large quantities of these beneficial sulphur compounds. Scientific studies have shown that the transformation growth factor (TgF) found in colostrum can help prevent osteoporosis. Osteoclasts are cells that destroy bone by breaking down the bone substance and thus cause osteoporosis, which is characterized by porosity and loss of bone strength. Osteoblasts, on the other hand, are bone-forming cells. With increasing age, the number of osteoblasts decreases and the number of osteoclasts increases. This is particularly true for women after the menopause, as a drop in oestrogen levels has been shown to result in an increase in osteoclasts. A study published in the journal Natural Medicine shows that TgF-B, which only occurs naturally in colostrum, is produced naturally by the bone-forming osteoblasts. The study also shows that TGF-B dramatically increases cell apoptosis (cell death) among bone-destroying osteoclasts. The study suggests that TGF-B can help to slow down or even prevent the development of osteoporosis. Colostrum is the only readily available natural source of growth factors, including TGF-B. We therefore recommend that anyone who wants to do something for the density and strength of their bones should take colostrum regularly. We also recommend that post-menopausal women visit their doctor to have their hormone levels checked. Research suggests that combining careful hormone replacement therapy (e.g. with oestrogen and progesterone) with daily colostrum supplementation can be an extremely effective measure against the scourge of osteoporosis that affects so many of our fellow citizens.

Important facts about colostrum

In view of the increasing number of colostrum users, it is important to clarify and explain the important facts to be considered with this remarkable substance. This primarily concerns the mode of action of colostrum, as well as the method of application to achieve an optimal health effect. Colostrum supports the human organism in two main ways. Firstly, the multiple immune factors and natural antibiotics it contains are a valuable support for the immune system. Secondly, its many growth factors give the organism a broadband boost that promotes optimal health and recovery.

Immune factors in colostrum

Medical studies show that colostrum contains important immune factors (immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, cytokines and interferon) that help restore an effective immune system. Immunoglobulins are large protein molecules that are soluble in salt solutions but not in water. They comprise more than 40 percent of the proteins contained in our blood serum. In mammals, including humans, there are five immunoglobulin classes, each beginning with the abbreviation lg, followed by the capital letters A, D, E, G or M. Each class has its own unique amino acid structure and specific function in the body. The immunoglobulins IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG and lgM occur in the body individually and in multiple combinations. They can each bind to a specific antigen, penetrate, destroy or immobilize it. Colostrum contains all five immunoglobulins. IgA is found in blood serum as well as in saliva, tear fluid and mucous membranes. lgG (the immunoglobulin found in the highest concentration in bovine colostrum) is transported into the lymphatic and vascular system, where it helps to render toxins and other invading pathogens harmless. IgD and IgE have a strong antiviral effect, while IgM is an effective bactericide (antibiotic). Colostrum also contains polyproline-rich peptides (PRP), which, as medical studies have shown, help to strengthen a poorly functioning immune system. PRP supports the thymus gland in restoring its optimal functioning. The thymus gland produces the vital T-cells that fight viruses and antigens. The PRP found in colostrum also helps to balance an overactive immune system in autoimmune diseases, where the body attacks itself. Colostrum is extremely effective for the following diseases, among others: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis (PcP), Lupus and Scleredema. Finally (but not least), colostrum contains lactoferrin, which has been shown in numerous scientific studies to be an effective natural broad-spectrum antibiotic and antiviral agent (pharmaceutical antibiotics do not work against viruses). In a recent study in the Netherlands, lactoferrin was shown to be an effective HIV-1 virus inhibitor (HIV-1 is the main virus that causes AIDS). It also contains antibodies against a variety of bacterial, fungal and protozoan pathogens. Lactoferrin is also an effective antioxidant that fends off the harmful effects of free radicals. Since almost all infections and degenerative diseases, including cancer and heart disease, are characterized by reduced immune system function before or at the time of onset, colostrum can help prevent these dangerous conditions by effectively supporting the immune system.

Growth factors in colostrum

Equally important for the organism and one of the reasons for the broad spectrum of effects of colostrum are the many growth factors contained in colostrum. These seemingly miraculous substances have been shown to promote tissue repair, increase the body's ability to metabolize fats and build lean muscle tissue, balance blood sugar and brain chemical levels and even repair DNA and RNA. Colostrum contains insulin-like growth factor (IgF), which stimulates cell growth and repair, transformation growth factors TgF-a and TgF-b, which stimulate the synthesis and repair of DNA and RNA and the repair of muscle tissue in athletes, and epithelial growth factor (EgF), which stimulates normal skin growth.

What distinguishes colostrum from plant-based preparations?

Plants form the basis for food or natural medicine and they nourish the body or support it in healing processes. Colostrum not only supports healing processes, but also actively provides the body with immunoglobulins and growth factors. Colostrum helps athletes to burn fat... and build muscle mass. Athletes and all those who regularly and seriously train and work on their fitness are constantly looking for ways to boost their performance and achieve better and better results. According to clinical studies as well as user reports, colostrum is the most effective of all natural substances discovered to help athletes achieve their desired performance. In fact, according to many bodybuilders and fitness experts, colostrum is the most effective muscle builder they have ever used without resorting to illegal (and harmful) steroids. In an article in lron Man Magazine (a magazine for serious bodybuilders), Daniel Shawn explains that the insulin-like growth factor IGF-1 found in colostrum has a remarkably stronger anabolic effect than all known supplements, even steroids. IGF-1 can "stimulate muscle growth on its own," writes Steve Schwade, co-editor of the journal Muscle & Fitness. "Bovine colostrum has a higher concentration of IGF-1 than human colostrum," he continues, "and its structure is virtually identical. Human IGF-1 and bovine IGF-1 differ only by three amino acids in the 67-amino acid chain that makes up the IGF-1 molecule. Because of this similarity, bovine IGF-1 is just as effective as the human form." Schwade cites recent research showing that colostrum slows down protein breakdown and "... stimulates glucose transport in the muscles". This means that the muscles use the available fuel more efficiently. As far as fat metabolism is concerned, the growth factors in Colostrurn shift fuel utilization from carbohydrates to fats. This does not mean that you can eat more fat, but that your body burns more fat, including the fats that are formed from the carbohydrates and proteins you eat, and thus uses the fuel more efficiently," Schwade continues. Summarizing, Schwade says, "The basic idea is that the growth factors (in colostrum) accelerate protein synthesis and slow protein breakdown, resulting in an increase in lean muscle without a corresponding increase in adipose tissue." Once again Daniel Shawn from Iron Man Magazine: "In a nutshell: IGF-1 is the most important of the growth factors in the form of anabolic peptides. What is it found in? In colostrum." "I myself train regularly with weights and have noticed clear improvements in myself since I started taking colostrum. I can lift more weight during training than before and now increase the weight at shorter intervals. I recover more quickly after a training session and can move on to the next exercise after a short break. I'm full of energy after lifting weights, whereas I used to be tired for about an hour after training. The results are clear to see - my pants are looser, while my shirts and jackets are tighter! And all without any major changes to my diet (I have a healthy appetite anyway)." Further studies have recently been carried out with athletes. In an article published in Nutrition Science News in May 1996, Dr. phil. Edmund Burke reported on a research study involving the Finnish Olympic ski team. "The athletes trained extremely hard. The activity of creatine kinase in the blood plasma was monitored over a period of seven days. Creatine kinase is a vital enzyme found in the muscles which, when found in the blood, indicates muscle cell damage. Thus, an increase in creatine levels in blood plasma is often a sign of significant muscle damage. Compared to team members who drank placebos, the athletes who were given a colostrum drink showed approximately half the creatine kinase activity four days after hard training." They also reported being less tired and, subjectively, had improved their performance. In the article, Burke goes on to say that colostrum "improves athletes' performance via the gut route". Colostrum stimulates the absorption of nutrients in the intestines and thus increases the absorption of carbohydrates and amino acids. In addition, the growth factors in colostrum protect the intestines from ulcer formation, which results in a reduction in absorption capacity. Taking colostrum therefore means that more nutrients from the food you eat can be used as fuel for training purposes, whether to strengthen the cardiovascular system or to build muscle. Colostrum, with its multiple benefits, is great news for anyone who is exercising regularly but not yet performing as well as they should. Colostrum has no known side effects. Please follow the instructions of the respective product.
