Cordyceps, also known as caterpillar fungus, is a medicinal mushroom known beyond the borders of China. It is full of natural, active biomolecules such as beta-glucans, ergosterol and provitamin D. It is also rich in amino acids, linoleic and linolenic acid as well as vitamins and minerals. Its high content of cordycepin or cordycepic acid and adenosine is particularly noteworthy. These make cordyceps a unique energizing mushroom with an extremely high therapeutic value. For this reason, there have already been numerous studies on cordyceps and it is of great interest for scientific research.

One notable benefit found in the subjects of one study was its influence on hormone production. The test group benefited from increased testosterone levels, which appear to be linked to the intake of cordyceps (1). There are also numerous laboratory studies on cells or mammals that have also demonstrated and substantiated this effect (2,3,4). Increased testosterone levels in turn provide a whole range of benefits when it comes to weight training and muscle building (5,6).

Another advantage of taking cordyceps is its effect on muscle endurance and the provision of energy for the muscles. This begins with a significant increase in ATP production (7) - the energy source that provides your muscles with the energy for maximum contractions. The effect extends to a maximization of VO2 max (7,8,9) - a decisive marker for maximum endurance and optimized stamina.

Cordyceps also offers several benefits in terms of recovery and can dramatically accelerate it. This effect begins with a pronounced antioxidant effect (10,11). Antioxidants protect cells from damage caused by free radicals and thus contribute to cell health. In addition, the caterpillar fungus also has a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect (10,12). Inflammation levels can be significantly higher on average after exercise. Counteracting this condition and thus possibly promoting regeneration can make perfect sense in the context of optimized performance. As if all this were not enough, Cordyceps can support the function of the immune system by increasing the activity of macrophages, also known as phagocytes (13).

Ein nennenswerter Vorteil, der bei den Probanden einer Studie festgestellt werden konnte, ist der Einfluss auf die Hormonproduktion. Die Testgruppe profitierte von einem erhöhten Testosteronspiegel, der in Zusammenhang mit der Einnahme von Cordyceps zu stehen scheint (1). Darüber hinaus gibt es auch zahlreiche Laborstudien an Zellen, oder Säugetieren, die diesen Effekt ebenfalls aufzeigten und untermauern konnten (2,3,4). Ein erhöhter Testosteronspiegel wiederum liefert eine ganze Bandbreite an Vorteilen, wenn es um Kraftsport und Muskelaufbau geht (5,6).
