Our body can produce most of the fats it needs itself from other fats. Unfortunately, this does not apply to omega-3 fatty acids, which is why they are also referred to as essential fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are incredibly important for our body and fulfill a variety of different functions. They are an essential component of cell membranes throughout the body (1,2) and are the starting point for the production of many hormones (2,3). These hormones in turn regulate blood clotting, inflammatory processes and the contraction and relaxation of arterial walls (2,3). Because of these effects, omega-3 fatty acids are considered by the European Union's Health Claims Directive to have a positive influence on maintaining normal blood cholesterol levels and supporting normal heart function. In addition, studies have shown that they also play an extremely important role for the metabolism (5,6), joint health (7) and the immune system (8 ) in the test groups. Two of the most important omega-3 fatty acids are eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid(DHA).
