Selenium is a vital trace element that is a key building block of the amino acid selenocysteine and a number of important enzymes. The human body cannot produce selenium itself, which is why it relies on it being supplied through food or in the form of a high-quality selenium product such as Apollon Selenium. However, not all selenium can be used by the body to the same extent; some inferior products rely on sodium selenite. This only has a bioavailability of 50 % or less, which means poor absorption by the human body. Apollon Selenium, on the other hand, relies exclusively on selenomethionine, the highest quality form of the trace element. This has a bioavailability of approx. 90 % (1).

Health benefits of selenium

One of the best-known functions of selenium is its effect as a highly effective antioxidant. Antioxidants effectively protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that occur both in our environment and are formed as waste products by the body itself as part of various metabolic processes. Increased levels of free radicals are not only associated with the development of numerous diseases, but are also considered by many scientists to be one of the main triggers for the progression of the body's biological ageing process (2,3). In one study, selenium was able to help counteract the age-related decline in brain function and motor coordination (4).

In addition, selenium also contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system. It is involved in a number of different mechanisms in the human body that have a direct or indirect influence on the immune system. Selenium had a stimulating effect on the production of antibodies in the subjects of a study (5,6). These antibodies are used to eliminate pathogens such as viruses, bacteria and fungi, as well as toxic pollutants. In addition, selenium also has an antiviral effect in itself, which also supports the immune system (7,8).

In addition, selenium plays a decisive role in the production of hormones. One of the most important hormones whose endogenous production is influenced by selenium is testosterone (9). Testosterone is crucial for a whole range of important processes in the human body (10). Examples include muscle building, fat burning, libido and general mood. However, selenium not only appears to play a role in testosterone production, it also appears to have had a positive effect on the production of the muscle-building hormone IGF-1 in the subjects of one study (11).

However, selenium is not only an important trace element for muscle building. Selenium also plays an important role in male fertility and female fertility. In one study, for example, a selenium deficiency resulted in greatly reduced fertility, which could be effectively counteracted by taking selenium and other substances (8). Studies have shown similar results for women's fertility. Researchers came to the conclusion that selenium appears to play an important role in follicular health (12).

In addition, selenium is also involved in the optimal functioning of the thyroid gland (13). It is needed in the human body to ensure adequate production of thyroid hormones (14,15). Studies have shown that a selenium deficiency can lead to a reduced production of these hormones and thus a reduced function of the thyroid gland (15). The thyroid gland is an organ that is a key factor in healthy and ideal metabolic function. It primarily produces the inactive thyroid hormone thyroxine, better known by the abbreviation T4. T4 must first be converted into the active thyroid hormone triiodothyronine - T3 for short. This conversion is controlled with the help of selenium. Without sufficient amounts of selenium, adequate amounts of T3 cannot be produced from T4. As a result, the metabolism can be significantly impaired.

Scientific studies have shown that selenium has anti-inflammatory effects based on inhibition of the activation of interleukin-6 and inhibition of TNF-alpha production (6,16,17). Interleukin-6 is involved in the body-wide regulation of inflammatory reactions and inhibition of this cytokine can make a decisive contribution to reducing inflammation.

Selenium is not only important for physical health, but also plays a crucial role in mental health. Low selenium levels have been linked to depression, anxiety and self-doubt in scientific studies (18). In addition, one study showed that people with low selenium levels tire more quickly and have a reduced ability to concentrate (19). These observations can be explained, among other things, by the fact that selenium is essential for the optimal functioning of the nervous system and therefore also the brain, and that it plays a protective role in the production of important neurotransmitters in the human brain (20).

Selenium from Gods Rage provides you with all the benefits of this potent trace element in a single capsule. Due to its high bioavailability, it is easily absorbed and can therefore unfold its full effect without any detours. Selen

Dosierung spitze und schön dass es den Wirkstoff einzeln zu holen gibt, bin nicht immer ein Fan von Kombipräparaten.
