Chromium is an essential trace element that the human body cannot produce itself. It is of crucial importance for various metabolic processes and the maintenance of many important health processes. Among other things, chromium is involved in the regulation of blood sugar levels and plays an important role in improving insulin sensitivity (1). The body needs chromium to efficiently use insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. A lack of chromium can lead to insulin resistance, which increases the risk of diabetes (1,2). Chromium also supports carbohydrate metabolism by promoting the uptake of glucose into cells. This can help to keep blood sugar levels stable or lower them, as scientific studies have also shown (3).

For example, one study showed that supplementation with chromium significantly reduced both blood glucose levels and the HbA1c value, which is a marker for long-term blood glucose levels, in patients with type 2 diabetes (2). A study carried out at Shanghai Medical College also showed that chromium can reduce the release of the peptide hormone resistin in cell cultures, which has been studied several times in the context of the development of insulin resistance (4). The positive effects of chromium supplementation on insulin and blood sugar levels are often already measurable within the first days and weeks of intake. In addition, there is strong evidence that adequate chromium intake can have a positive effect on cardiovascular health, as it can counteract excessive cholesterol and triglyceride levels, as well as calcification of the arteries (5). However, depending on the dosage used, it can take several weeks to months before positive changes in cholesterol and triglyceride levels become measurable when supplementing with chromium.

Of particular interest to older people is the fact that chromium can increase the production of the endogenous hormone dehydroepiandrosterone, which acts as a precursor for the synthesis of testosterone and oestrogen, among other things (6). Dehydroepiandrosterone production decreases with age and this decrease has been linked to symptoms during and after the menopause, as well as the undesirable consequences of low testosterone levels in ageing men (7). A sufficient intake of chromium can also have a positive effect on the function of the immune system, as insulin is involved in the activation of white blood cells, also known as T lymphocytes, which play a crucial role in the body's immune defense (8). Chromium is also involved in the regulation of fat metabolism. It helps to promote the breakdown of fatty acids and reduce the build-up of adipose tissue. This can be beneficial if you are trying to control your weight or reduce body fat. There is also evidence that chromium can help control appetite and reduce cravings. This could be particularly relevant for people who have difficulty losing weight (9,10).

Overall, chromium plays a significant role in human metabolism and can help support health, especially when it comes to blood sugar regulation, fat metabolism and weight control. As always, GN puts quality first to ensure optimal effectiveness. Chrome by GN Laboratories - because in the end, only results count.
