Amino acids reduce the loss of strength caused by high-volume training
Intensive high-volume training initiates both anabolic (muscle-building) and catabolic (muscle-degrading) processes, which take place during the regeneration phase. The anabolic metabolism helps to form new protein in the muscle cells and build both strength and muscle mass. Catabolic processes help to repair the muscles and heal inflammation caused by microtraumas (tiny injuries in the muscles) and intensive training. Increases in strength and muscle mass are only possible when the anabolic processes exceed the catabolic processes. Many studies have found that the administration of protein and amino acids after training can increase strength and accelerate recovery. Researchers at the University of Connecticut have found that post-workout amino acid supplementation reduces the loss of muscle strength that typically occurs during high-volume exercise. Amino acids reduce muscle damage by stimulating anabolic metabolism and suppressing catabolic processes. (Metabolism Clinical Experimental, 55:282-291, 2006)
